Does “trust” feel too flimsy, too emotion-filled, not quite “actionable”?
Stephen M. R. Covey wrote in his book The Speed of Trust:
“Transcendent values like trust and integrity literally translate into revenue, profits & prosperity….. Mistrust doubles the cost of doing business.”
“The dividends of high trust are real, quantifiable, and incredibly high. Consider the speed with which you can communicate in your own relationships of high trust- both personal and professional. When trust is high, the dividend you receive is like a performance multiplier, elevating and improving every dimension of your organization and your life.”
Now, maybe I have your attention, but the thought that trust is more like a ghost or the wind- it cannot actually be seen nor grasped- may be gnawing at you. But Stephen goes on:
“Few things can help an individual more than to place responsibility on him, and to let him know that you trust him….
Trust is a function of two things: character and competence. “
And there it is: one- you should hire (character) and one- you should train and then empower (competence). So really, trust is all what YOU do as a business leader.
